How to pronounce Cairns
Locals say cans, not kerns. One syllable, rhymes with cans as in a slab of cans, and the R is silent. If you've been saying kerns, you're in a very large club, and the club meets at the check-in desk.

There's no stress pattern to learn because there's only one syllable, which is a rare gift in Australian place names. In a sentence it sits like any short word: "flying to Cairns on Friday", a little weight on it because it's the place, no more than that.
